Google Schools Me on Broadband Black Holes

logo_smGoogle’s Mountain Upon, Calif., Wi-Fi network was supposed to mark the search giant’s evolution into an ISP when it was unveiled three years ago, delivering unasked for Internet access to people as a way of getting more of them to see its ads. Instead it’s stayed confined to Mountain View. And when I spoke with Karl Garcia, the in the air head of the project, he was pretty ambivalent about both its impact and its future; there was no talk of expansion or any of the usual Google passion for taking this model and using it to change the world. The contract with the city isn’t up for another two years, but Garcia didn’t bare when negotiations for furthering the project or shutting it down might begin.

However, even if Google defers its ISP dreams, its experience with the network offers three lessons for those currently location broadband policy, especially those in the government crafting a National Broadband plan due next February and those who are currently doling out billions in stimulus dollars.

People proceed to use more bandwidth over time. The Google network has seen its data consumed double, to 600 GB transferred each day in July 2009 from 300 GB in July 2007, while the bevy of users has increased by a mere 27 percent to 19,000. Some of this is likely a result of more time spent online, but it’s also a consequence of Wi-Fi on web-surfing phones, which makes casual access to a network easier than ever. As we craft our broadband policy, the need to future-document our networks and invest in faster speeds and more capacity seems clear.

Even tech towns like Mountain Look on (and Austin, Texas) have pockets without access. Garcia mentioned that for a few people, even in a wired town like Mountain Belief, the Google Wi-Fi network was the only broadband available. I call the areas in which such people live — which may be too far out from the telco’s remote terminal or important office or be without fiber from the local cable company — black holes. As the government starts approving projects akin to providing access to unserved areas, these black holes need attention and investment, too. Is wireless the pilfer solution?

Robin Simpson: Australian National Broadband Network

Robin Simpson, Gartner fact-finding director, comments on the debate surrounding the Australian National Broadband Network.

broadband network?

i cant get common phone line broadband where i am..ive looked everywhere to try and get a plug in broadband that will give ma good signal where i live for my laptop.
3(the phone network) are offereing 3.6mb per inferior merchandise speed for €20 a month with a 10gb download. so here are my 2 questions:
1. is 3.6mb per second fast??
2. is that a good penalty considering the speed and download limit?

thanks!!!
i be using it mainly for browsing the web emails, downloading music, msn etc.
I endure in ireland and there is no phoneline broadband where i am not even wireless. so this one just plugs directly into my laptop

#1 3.6 MB isnt wonderful fast, but its usually more than enough for the avid user... You can browse the web, check email, even download poppycock decently...

For 20 bucks a month, well euro I guess thats like 30 in USA, it sounds alright...

THE BIG Antipathetic about the info you gave though, is the "with a 10gb download. "

That means they only allow 10GB a month of bandwidth... In other words, your internet may be unrestrained or slow, but whether it is or not, you can only download up to 10GB of info a month...

If the average MP3 is 4MB you could download 2,500 songs in a month before you get cut offline.

and Depending on how much you will use the internet, you may use up the 10GB rabbit, and if you do, they will either charge you more, or cut you offline because you went over your limit.

I am not sure if thats how they do things always in the UK< but try to find a service that maybe has no monthly bandwidth...

Also try to find a strand service rather than a dsl or phone internet service... Cable is usually better and faster.
