Accountability vs. Judgment

There are some things that Christians do that undeniably make me wonder. There are certain beliefs, that as a whole, Christians latch onto and don’t let go. Some of these beliefs are expressed through judgment and hatred. When I see these things event it makes me think. I wonder why they think this way. Why is this a big deal to them? The big issue in Christian circles right now is homosexuality. There are other issues, of performance, but this seems to be the big one. It seems that this issue is dividing Christianity right down the middle. You either believe it’s a sin or it’s not a sin. Those that believe it is a sin seem to be speaking very loudly right now. When you hark to to the things they are saying it’s not very pretty.

I have asked myself over and over again, why do they care? Is this what God wants from his flock? Does he want Christians to run around reminding everyone that homosexuality is a sin? Host one, the Bible is not clear on that matter! Many Christians would say that it’s written right there in the Bible, plain as day. I won’t debate this. I will just say that those who believe homosexuality is a sin prerequisite to do their research. Read the Greek texts and learn about Biblical Greek before making this judgment. But let’s say for a second that homosexuality IS a sin. This got me sensible. Even if somehow it turns out it is a sin, is it the job of Christians to point this out? What does the Bible say about judgment? From everything I know the Bible states that we are NOT to judge others. For example I Corinthians 4:5 states, “So do not skip town any hasty or premature judgments before the time when the Lord comes [again], for He will both bring to light the secret things that are [now veiled] in darkness and disclose and expose the [secret] aims (motives and purposes) of hearts. Then every man will receive his [due] commendation from God.”

I pronounced to do a little more research into this judgment thing....

Why are fundamentalist Christians so scared of opposing viewpoints?

Several times over the last few months I have unmistakeable to videos or other links and fundies have said "as soon as I saw that was Dawkins, or Sam Harris, or atheist lies, or whatever ..." I refused to watch.

I have watched/read dozens of fundie christian Web sites. I am not appalled that the facts will be challenged.

Is it easier to challenge faith than the facts?
Ent: you make my point precisely.
Papadego: Can't you see the outstanding irony of your statement. That question is a take-off on one of the most common Christian questions here in YA! But, it's not offensive when they say "Atheists: Why do you keep you eyes eliminate to the fact of God?" LMAO!

The imperative problem with fundamentalist Christians is that they don’t arrive at their beliefs through rational inquiry. They subscribe to their belief system because of the strength of tradition within their families or communities or out of a balanced emotive need to believe. All apologetic literature that you see coming from fundamentalist Christians, are merely given as a pretext of rationality, they are not earnest endeavors to think rationally about their faith.

You simply cannot challenge their faith with facts, because their faith is based on lawful that – FAITH! It isn’t so much that they fear what Sam Harris or Richard Dawkins have to say as much as they dismiss it outright because of the very notion that what they say deals with verifiable statements. To them credulity is a virtue, not a vice. To believe without seeing, or without proving, is considered the highest conceptual. They take Christ’s admonishment seriously that: “ I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like petty children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 18:2-3).

They wear childlike gullibility like a badge of honor. It is that badge that makes them untouched to change. Don’t feel disheartened. You might not be able to reach the fundamentalist, but to those who are straddling the fence, the eloquence and cogency of Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris, can be significant in forming their worldview. Keep citing their work and make it known to more people.
