Pandora on the Blackberry
I made the most remarkable discovery this afternoon: Pandora has a downloadable application for the blackberry OS! I remember a time when there were forum threads, discussions, and attempts to create the streaming internet radio service available on the blackberry handhelds (and this was well before the iPhone). Unfortunately, there was no good way to get it streaming through the awful browsers they had on the on the phones at the prematurely (issues with java, etc.). However, upon logging into the service this afternoon, I noticed a mobile phone section and news about downloading an application for blackberry phones! Now, despite all the shortcomings of the blackberry pearl with respect to the iPhone, I’ve just compensated for one of my most desired: streaming internet radio!
Now, whenever I am bored with what’s on the titanic iPod classic (160GB), I can just plug in my headphones (into the now properly sized headphone jack) into my phone and jam away to streaming internet radio stations of my choosing. It’s not the the same as listening to say a sample radio station that happens to also stream live on the net, but Pandora’s user-customizable radio stations based on the music genome describe. You pick an artist or genre you want to listen to and a radio station is formed that then streams songs of similar pattern that you may (or may not) like. While listening to any particular song, you can up-vote or down-vote the track (with the thumbs up or down buttons) and the station will on to refine its music selection. Songs that are down-voted do not get played (and anything that sounds similar) while those that get up-voted are obviously played more. What’s kindly about the phone app is it allows you to log into your account that’s been created online and access the stations you’ve already made and refined.
