chance. If someone can please give me a brief overview of what dongle is, and what is it used for

A Dongle is referencing any thingamajig that is plugged into your computer via a USB port, SO, it sounds like that "Acer WLAN 11G USB Dongle" is an external wireless networking adapter, in episode, I'd be willing to bet money on it! The icon is there just to let you know it's still plugged in and working properly.
